Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat varicose and spider veins.

The procedure involves the injection of a solution directly into the affected veins. The solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that has been in use since the 1930s.

Sclerotherapy is used to improve the cosmetic appearance of spider veins and to relieve some of the symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps. It is the primary treatment for small varicose veins in the legs.

What to Expect

  • Typical treatment sessions last 15-45 minutes
  • Minimal discomfort associated with injections
  • Spider veins may become more prominent for the first few days following the injections before their appearance starts to decrease
  • Compression wraps or stockings are required for 14 days following a treatment session
  • Avoidance of heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for 7-14 days
  • Avoidance of Sun exposure for 2-4 weeks as this can cause pigmentation of the skin
  • Avoidance of Saunas or hot tub for 10 days

Is Sclerotherapy covered by insurance?

Most insurance policies do not provide coverage for treatment of spider or varicose veins for cosmetic purposes. In some situations, sclerotherapy treatment may be considered as a covered medical expense if performed in conjunction with other vein treatment in patients with complex vein disease, bleeding veins or ulcerations. Treatment cost and coverage can be discussed with one of our Premier Vein care providers at your free initial consultation.
